‘ several stages of refinement and destruction ’
Tristan D. Grey,
Artist
The process of painting is one from abstraction to concretion and back to abstraction again. Starting with the blocking in of shapes onto the canvas, subsequentially defining those shapes in perpetually more detail only for them to be blurred and worked over again, the paintings go through several stages of refinement and destruction until the finalised image emerges. In my paintings, I am not interested in an exact photorealistic copy of reality but one that is more open to interpretation and demands a particular involvement by the observer in order to see the essence of the subject matter rather than its mere surface.
Most of my works are done in oil on canvas or panel boards while at the same time incorporating other materials like acrylic paint, screen prints, pencil and charcoal drawings, and transfers in mixed media.
