‘ In search for a line both direct and ambiguous ’
Tristan D. Grey,
Artist
More than any other medium, drawings represent the artist's direct translation of thought to surface with each stroke resulting in a mark on paper carrying the draughtsman's directest and spontaneous expression. In search for a line both directly and ambiguous to represent intention as well as openness for interpretation, I try to stay with my drawings between realism and abstraction to allow the observer enough space to use his own imagination to fill in the gaps and interpret the image based on his/her own experience.
For my drawings, I work mainly with charcoal or graphite on paper as well as with Conté, chalk, and pastel, incorporating other mediums and materials like acrylics, inks, prints or newspaper clippings to place this rather traditional art form and drawing approach into a more contemporary context, altering and reworking the pencil drawings with metal scrapers and turpentine solutions in order to create rich and differentiated surfaces from distinct lines and marks to smooth continuous surfaces.
